About Berwick Coastwatch
Berwick Coastwatch is an independent organisation run entirely by volunteers who give up a few hours a week to keep visual watch over all coastal areas around the bays and beaches of Berwick Upon Tweed. We also keep a listening watch on the VHF marine distress channel 16 and liaise with the Humber Coastguard Operations Centre.
We provide advice and information to visitors using the beaches and walking the coast path. We also carry out mobile patrols, who will visually check for signs of further cliff erosion, checking any safety equipment is useable and periodically pick up the ever increasing amounts of plastic rubbish found on the beaches. Other environmental activities include monitoring and data collection for Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority and also watching for and reporting Cetacean activity to the Sea Watch Foundation. Berwick Coastwatch is a member of the Sea Safety Group which is an association of independent Coastwatch stations and provides representation for the member stations at national level. We are also members of the Civil Defence Association. All funds raised by Berwick Coastwatch are used to maintain and equip the lookout tower and to provide a service to the local community. Leslie Wooler
18th December 1941 - 13th May 2018 In 2003 Leslie and his wife Moi first saw the Tower at Magdalene Fields. It was in poor condition and Leslie was the driving force in obtaining grants to initiate refurbishment. After 6 months of hard work involving painting, installing windows, solar panels, a wind turbine and doors, the Tower was officially opened in November 2003.
Leslie spent over 14 years of tireless, dedicated work to raise the profile of Coastwatch and with a loyal team of volunteers raised funds to ensure that Coastwatch was able to run successfully. Leslie's passion and enthusiasm for Coastwatch was evident to all who met him. His vital work will always be remembered. Leslie passed away in May 2018 after a short illness. He left behind a legacy which continues today as Berwick Coastwatch. Leslie was a committee member of the Civil Defence Association. He is mentioned in the Book of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire. |
